Born in the province of Milan, Lorusso studied sculpture at the Academy of Fine Arts of Brera in the late '90s. After dedicating herself to sculpture for about thirty years, moving from figurative art to Neorealism, she returned to figurative art. Her aesthetic and conceptual bases include ancient art to which she draws inspiration for her works, attracted by archaeology from which she finds inspirational sources. For this reason she participates in an internship at the Archaeological Site of Madinat Al-Zahra in Spain working in the area of support to the restoration during the months of April and May 2001. 

Lorusso at the beginning of 2020 after having been interested and experimented with the technique of encaustic from the little knowledge left to create a sense of movement in her works with the use of transparent superimpositions of wax and natural fibers.

After admiring the works of artists of Russian Constructivism in St. Petersburg during an artistic residency, he began to be interested in the infinite expressive values of materials. He experiments with unusual materials such as plastic, rubber, scotch paper, natural fibers, etc.. to compose works always related to the theme of the old but with a new expressive value related to the possibilities of materials. In his artistic work Lorusso wonders about a possible meeting and conjunction between past and present through the reinterpretation of ancient Greek Roman works and visual culture of ancien Italian art.

He exhibits in the gallery Espai B - Torrent de l'Olla, 158, 08012 Barcelona, Spain and participates in a solo exhibition in the same year at Gallery 2,04 - Pushkinskaya ul., 10 - St.. Peterburg - Russia.
He also exhibits one of his works in the section "A4 ART" at Dama Daphne Museum Art in Campania since 2015. Museum 2015 - Work in permanent exhibition - A4 ART - Dama Daphne Museum Art – Campania.

In 2023 Wins of the third prize in the competition at the XI Fundació Barcelona Olímpica - Art on Paper Prize - Museu Olímpic i dell'Esport Joan Antoni Samaranch in Barcelona with the work 'Olympics'

In 2015 Won first prize in the competition "ArTcontest_2015 " in Tuscany in Rocca Tederighi province of Grosseto with The installation work "Rinascita".

He currently teaches in an Art School in Milan.

Artist steatment

Creativa, lavoro con mezzi, supporti, materiali sperimentali artificiali e naturali, come la plastica, il neoprene, l'organza, il propilene, la carta di riso, la manila ecc... L'amore per la sperimentazione mi porta ad esplorare nuove tecniche accanto alle antiche per creare opere innovative frutto della congiunzione tra passato e presente. La mia ricerca iconografica attinge dal repertorio archeologico scultoreo e pittorico greco e romano, fino all'arte barocca. Nel mio lavoro vi è la riscoperta del frammento, l'amore per l'arte antica che analizzo con il fine ultimo di creare interesse attraverso dei quesiti, domande... In passato, gli artisti durante il loro lavoro hanno avuto ripensamenti, oggi ci chiediamo perché ciò sia accaduto. Grazie alle radiografie possiamo porci almeno queste domande. Spesso dietro un'immagine che vediamo c'è né un'altra nascosta. Con i raggi X è possibile vedere intersezioni di volti, corpi, oggetti rappresentati. Nel mio lavoro spesso mi servo di immagini radiografiche col fine di rappresentare la dualità dell'anima immortale dell'uomo passato, presente e futuro. La dualità nel mio lavoro che spazia tra disegno, pittura, scultura e l'installazione, va intesa come ricerca personale dell'artista, spesso in contrasto con i suoi scopi, che cambia e talvolta stravolge.

Artist steatment Creative, I work with means, supports, artificial and natural experimental materials, such as plastic, neoprene, organza, propylene, rice paper, manila etc... The love of experimentation leads me to explore new techniques alongside the ancient ones to create innovative works resulting from the conjunction between past and present. My iconographic research draws from the Greek and Roman sculptural and pictorial archaeological repertoire, up to Baroque art. In my work there is the rediscovery of the fragment, the love for ancient art that I analyze with the ultimate aim of creating interest through questions, questions... In the past, the artists during their work have had second thoughts, today we we ask why this happened. Thanks to x-rays we can ask ourselves at least these questions. Often behind an image we see there is neither another hidden. With X-rays it is possible to see intersections of faces, bodies, objects represented. In my work I often use radiographic images in order to represent the duality of the immortal soul of man past, present and future. The duality in my work that ranges between drawing, painting, sculpture and installation, must be understood as personal research by the artist, often in contrast with his purposes, which changes and sometimes changes.

Exhibition of two works by Carmela Monica Lorusso at the XX Biennial Internacional de Arte de Cerveira, from August 10 to September 23, under the theme "Plastic Arts traditional and Digital Arts".

Alla XX Bienal Internacional de Cerveira sono esposte quest'anno due opere dell'artista Italiana di Milano Carmela Monica Lorusso: le opere "Il sogno di Dioniso" e "Persephone" sono realizzate su teli in plastica dopo un'attenta e lunga ricerca sulle potenzialità e le infinite possibilità dei materiali "poveri" ai fini creativi ed espressivi.

La scelta dei materiali è funzionale all'intenzionalità dell'opera, le immagini disegnate sulla plastica ricordano volutamente negativi fotografici con le luci e ombre invertite. Nell'immaginario dell'artista corpi e volti di antiche sculture greco romane si sovrappongono e si fondono armoniosamente in un tutt'uno creando movimento ed evidenziando un esplicito filo conduttore dell'artista impegnato alla continua ricerca di un collegamento tra presente e passato.
